Safety and Preparedness Assessment of Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Hospital in Ilam in Response to Disasters and Emergencies: A Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction:  Hospitals, as safe locations for patient care, are exposed to various internal and external disasters. Damage to hospital structures can seriously compromise the continuity of healthcare services and the health and safety of patients, staff, and occupants. The present study aimed to assess the safety and preparedness status of Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Hospital in Ilam City against disasters and emergencies in 2024.
Materials & Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 2024 with the aim of assessing the safety and preparedness status of Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Hospital in Ilam City against disasters and emergencies. Data were collected using observation, interviews, and the World Health Organization’s Hospital Safety Index (HSI) questionnaire. This instrument comprises 145 indicators across five domains, including general hospital information, hazard identification, functional safety assessment, and structural and non-structural safety assessments. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 18) and Microsoft Excel (version 2013).
Results: In the present study, hospital safety levels in the structural, non-structural, and functional domains were reported as 55.77%, 51.05%, and 47.78%, respectively. The overall hospital safety score was 52.76%, indicating a moderate level of safety. Additionally, the hospital safety level was estimated at 7 out of 10. Among the identified hazards, biological ones had the highest frequency of occurrence.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that the overall safety level of the hospital is moderate. Although the hospital is not in a critical condition during emergencies, implementation of appropriate interventions is necessary to improve its safety level.
