Evaluation of Interleukin-38 Serum Levels in Patients with Placenta Accreta

Introduction:  Placenta accreta is one of the life-threatening pregnancy-related disorders. Placenta accreta is generally described by extreme placentation and penetration of the placenta into the myometrium. There are increasing data regarding the role of the immune system in the induction of placenta accreta. IL-38 is a recently introduced member of the IL-1 cytokine family, which may play a role in the regulation of inflammatory response. This study aimed to investigate the serum level of IL-38 in patients complicated with placenta accreta.
Materials & Methods: A total of 50 women, including 23 women with placenta accreta, 13 healthy pregnant women, and 14 non-pregnant women, were enrolled in this study. Clinical and demographic data were recorded for all cases. The quantitative serum levels of IL-38 were measured using the ELISA method.
Results: The serum levels of IL-38 were significantly higher in non-pregnant cases compared to women complicated with placenta accreta as well as normal pregnant women (62.88±23.58 vs. 25.41±26.84 and 10.04±7.22, respectively; p-value < 0.001 for both comparisons), while there were no statistical differences between normal pregnant women and women diagnosed with placenta accreta regarding IL-38 serum levels (p = 0.2).
Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, the lower levels of IL-38 in the patients with placenta accreta indicate the lack of compensatory response toward the high level of angiogenesis stimuli and trophoblast invasion during this disease.
