Gallery Walk in Health Professions Education

The Gallery Walk method is a simple, low-cost, and learner-centered method that promotes more active learner engagement in the learning process, as opposed to traditional methods, such as lectures. In this approach, students work in small groups, review posters posted on the classroom wall, respond to open-ended questions associated with each poster, observe and critique the responses of other groups, and gain deeper learning and problem-solving abilities through peer interaction and feedback. Such an approach may improve the competencies of health professional students in areas like critical thinking, problem solving, effective communication, teamwork, and time management. Yet this educational approach is less familiar in health professions education. Challenges to Implementation: Time to prepare content; difficulty with classroom management; stress from time constraints. To meet these challenges, it might be useful to include a facilitator or teaching assistant in larger classes, set an appropriate time for responding to questions based on their complexity, and use the method in classes with limited capacity. |
