The Relationship Between Mental Health and the Inclination to Donate Blood Among Residents of Ilam

Introduction:  Blood donation represents the highest manifestation of ethical responsibility and human commitment, emerging from a profound sense of individual duty and, within the framework of health institutions, transforming into a vital service for society. This conscious and voluntary act is not merely a social activity; rather, it is a symbol of solidarity, altruism, and active participation in the preservation of human life. It is a life-giving and hope-inspiring practice performed directly and without expectation of reward, whose consequences are intrinsically linked to the continuity of life and the health of others. Given the importance of this issue, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between mental health and the tendency toward blood donation among the citizens of Ilam.
Materials & Methods: This study employed a survey research design. The statistical population consisted of all individuals in Ilam who referred to the Blood Transfusion Center for blood donation in 2025. Using a convenience sampling method, 100 donors were selected as the study sample. Data were collected through the Goldberg Mental Health Questionnaire and a researcher-made questionnaire measuring the tendency toward blood donation. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software. Research hypotheses were tested using Pearson’s correlation coefficient (to examine relationships between variables) and regression analysis.
Results: The results indicated that there was no significant relationship between impairment in social functioning and the tendency toward blood donation among the citizens of Ilam (p = 0.098); therefore, the corresponding hypothesis was rejected. However, a significant negative relationship was found between somatic symptoms (p = 0.013), anxiety status, and depression status and the tendency toward blood donation (p = 0.000).
Conclusion: The findings demonstrated that mental health plays a significant role in the tendency toward blood donation, such that higher levels of mental health are associated with an increased willingness to engage in altruistic behaviors, including blood donation. In line with the results of this study, the analyses revealed a significant positive relationship between somatic symptoms and the tendency toward blood donation, whereas anxiety and depression showed a significant negative correlation with the tendency toward blood donation.
