In recent decades the fast development of health care systems has shown that many complex human and clinical problems can no longer be effectively understood or handled within the confines of a single discipline. Interdisciplinary methods are needed to address challenges such as an ageing population, chronic diseases, health inequities, mental health problems, and developing technologies. As a result, interdisciplinary research has become a major method for knowledge growth in the health sciences (1). Interdisciplinary research combines information, data, techniques, tools, viewpoints, ideas, and/or theories from two or more disciplines to advance fundamental understanding or to solve problems whose answers are beyond the scope of a single field or area of research practice. In this way, we push back the frontiers of knowledge but also help create more pragmatic, patient-centered and socially conscious healthcare solutions. There is evidence that interdisciplinary collaboration of medicine, nursing, psychology, social sciences, engineering, data science and medical ethics may contribute considerably to the quality of research and healthcare outcomes (1,2).
