Investigation of Noise Pollution in the Intensive Care and Emergency Sections of Ilam University of Medical Sciences Hospitals in 2025

Introduction:  Given the global interest in natural therapies and the emphasis on the higher safety profile of herbal compounds, investigating the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants in managing oral infections is of paramount importance. This study was therefore designed to evaluate the combined effects of ethanolic extracts of ginger (Zingiber officinale) and turmeric (Curcuma longa) against oral pathogens – specifically, Streptococcus mutans (the causative agent of dental caries) and Candida albicans (responsible for oral candidiasis).
Materials & Methods: Ethanolic extracts of ginger and turmeric rhizomes prepared by maceration were tested for antibacterial and antifungal activity against Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans using disc diffusion, well diffusion and biofilm formation assays at different concentrations. Controls were amoxicillin, nystatin and 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash. Statistical significance was determined by analysing mean inhibition zone diameters using Kruskal-Wallis test (p < 0.05). Statistics were done using SPSS 22. Disc diffusion, well diffusion and biofilm formation experiments at varied doses examined the antibacterial and antifungal activities against Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. Controls were amoxicillin, nystatin and 0.2% chlorhexidine mouthwash. Statistical significance was determined by analysing mean inhibition zone diameters using Kruskal-Wallis test (p < 0.05). Statistics were done using SPSS 22.
Results: The combined ethanolic extracts of ginger (80 mg/mL) and turmeric (20 mg/mL) exhibited the highest antimicrobial effects against the tested pathogens, but their efficacy was lower than amoxicillin, nystatin (both at 100 mg/mL) and chlorhexidine mouthwash (100 mg/mL) (p < 0.05). Importantly, only chlorhexidine at 100 mg/mL was able to inhibit biofilm formation.
Conclusion: The combination of ginger and turmeric extracts showed promising antimicrobial potential against oral infections but failed to prevent biofilm formation, indicating the need for further quantitative investigations (e.g., MIC/MBC determinations) and in vivo studies to fully evaluate its therapeutic applications.
