AIntroduction: Several personal factors and different social contexts, each of them in a way or in another are effective in deter-mining the mental health of individuals. Nowadays, one of the factors that if reco-gnized can have a role in the quality of mental health among the citizens and is considered as the missing link in mental health is social capital. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between social capital and mental health among the citizens of Shahr-e-Kord at the age of 15- 65 in 1391. Therefore, the indicators of social capital, namely (social trust, social participation, social norms‚ social belonging) and their relation with mental health were studied among citizens of Shahr-e-Kord.
Materials & Methods: The method of this research was surveying or measurement based and belonging to the correlative type. The statistical population was the citizens over 15 years and the number of partic-ipants was 119512 in Shahr-e-Kord in the year 1390. The sample consisted of 383 persons selected by using Cochran form-ula. Data were obtained through self-made questionnaire for social capital and for mental health the standard SCL-90 questi-onnaire Content validity was used for measuring the validity and for determining the reliability of the questionnaire, Cron-bach’s alpha. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the social capital questi-onnaire were 0.86 and 0.95 for mental health, respectively. Data were collected by using multi-stage quotas sampling and by applying analyzed SPSS software were analyzed.
Findings: The results indicated that social capital has a statistical significant relation with mental health among the citizens of Shahr-e-Kord and among different com-ponents of social capital ‚social participate-on and social norms have direct and medium relation and social trust‚ has direct and poor relation to mental health . In this way‚ there is no relation between social belonging and mental health and a signi-ficant relationship between social capi-tal and mental health was also obse-rved. In addition, the effect of the following indicators (age, gender, marriage status,) was confirmed.
Discussion & Conclusion: It could be concluded that if people benefit more from social capital‚ they would enjoy a better mental status and on the other hand, those who have a higher mental health level will be qualified for accepting social respons-ibilities and social roles in society and this is indicated in the mutual relationship of mental health and social capital. Therefore ‚ improvement of each category could affect the others.
