Dialectical Behavior Therapy Group on the Perception of the Disease and Quality of Life of Patients with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Introduction: In the last decade as one of the most effective treatments dialectical, behavior therapy in the treatment of many disorders has been introduced. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of dialectical behavior therapy and cognitive therapy on quality of life in patients with irritable bowel syndrome as a disease. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of Dialectical behavior therapy group on quality of life and perception of the disease, patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Materials & methods: The research method was experimental (pretest-posttest control group and random assignment). The sample of the study consisted of 30 patients with irritable bowel syndrome which in 2014 among all patients were admitted to hospitals. After the interview, the Rome-III diagnostic criteria and Quality of life, and illness perception questionnaire, random sampling (n = 15 per group) was carried out and they were randomly divided into two experimental groups and one control. After completing 8 meeting dialectical behavior therapy group (90-minute sessions a week for two months), re-test was repeated in both groups.

Findings: Multivariate analysis of variance showed that dialectical behavioral therapy group was significantly effective in the improvement of the quality of life and increased understanding of the disease among patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

Discussion & conclusions: Dialectical behavior therapy can improve the quality of life and increase understanding of the disease in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. So, this intervention is effective in improving the signs used and can improve physical and mental performance to help people with irritable bowel syndrome.
